Governance and Leadership

Northside Primary School was built with British Government funds in 1973 and opened its doors to 156 children in January 1974. It was run by the Government of Botswana until 1977 when it became an independent school at the wish of the Botswana Government.

The school was incorporated by founder member companies as a company limited by their guarantee, in April 1977. The founder members are : Barclays Bank, Debswana, Aon Botswana, Barloworld Botswana, Murry Roberts, Standard Chartered Bank and Sun International.

The school has two classes of members defined as Founder Members and Parent Members.

The school is governed by a council of nine councillors consisting of four members each from the two member classes and elected by each member class. The ninth councillor is a representative of the Botswana Ministry of Education.

School Council

At each Annual General Meeting, the two longest serving members retire. New Council members receive the Guidelines for Council Members Manual and are taken for a tour through the school and also updated on the current Council deliberations. The Council includes a Chairperson, a Deputy Chairperson and a Financial Advisor who are elected each year.

It meets monthly during the academic year and by standing invitation, the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and Bursar attend the meetings. Policies of the Council have accumulated over time and can be found in the minutes of previous meetings over the years of operation.

The Headteacher, with the school management team, oversees the day-to-day running of the school. The Headteacher involves the school management in decision making. Decisions are communicated through an annual Headteacher’s Report to parents and weekly newsletters. Council present to parents at the Annual General Meeting and at the end of the second term when the budget for the following year is announced.

The Bursar and Headteacher manage the finances of the school and allocate budgets to subject coordinators. The Financial Advisor reviews the accounts monthly and reports back at Council Meetings.

P.T.A.

Northside is very fortunate to have an extremely active P.T.A. ensuring that the year is filled with fun events for the families of Northside to enjoy together. Some events are fundraising and some are merely social.

There are traditional events that happen each term, complementing the seasons and the school events calendar.

The proceeds from the P.T.A. fundraising endeavours, are allocated each year towards developments that add value to the students' lives.

In the past the funds raised have enabled gardening projects, School hall renovations, air-conditioners, water-fountains and irrigation systems.
